Obesity has caused Randie's blindnessWe rescued Randie Lou and her sister Penny Lane from horrendous conditions in the fall of 2021. They were living in a dark, filthy, urine-soaked mud hole in the back of a shed with no access to sunshine or fresh air. Randie Lou is morbidly obese from eating commercial hog food, which has resulted in fat blindness, a condition caused by the folds of fat covering her eyes. Obesity in potbellied pigs is such a hard condition to reverse, and in Randie's case, it's impacting her quality of life. When she first arrived, our vet estimated that she was about 100 pounds overweight. Poor baby.
Read Randie Lou and Penny Lane's rescue story. Nutritious food and sunshine does wondersWe are slowly working on Randie Lou's weight, but unfortunately it doesn't come off overnight. Her diet now consists of healthy food, including fresh fruits and vegetables, so she's losing a little here and there, but she still has a long way to go. We have no idea if the fat folds over her eyes will fade with her weightloss. It's just a waiting game at this point.
But one thing we know for sure is that she now has access to fresh air, warm sunshine, shelter, and dry straw for napping. She also has woods to roam around in (she needs her exercise) and most importantly, a new herd! It's taking a while for her to adjust, considering that she can't see her surroundings, but she knows she's safe and loved, and that means everything. Please continue to keep Miss Randie Lou in your prayers that one day she'll be able to see again. |
