Pedro's story: From neglect to peaceWhen we first learned about Pedro’s situation in Virginia, our hearts broke. He and his companion, Petunia, were confined to a small, filthy enclosure—forced to live in thick mud mixed with their own waste. There was no clean water. No healthy food. Not even shade to protect them from the blazing sun.
To make matters worse, the owner had plans to hand them over to a backyard breeder to produce piglets for sale. Thankfully, that plan never came to be. With the help of our amazing friend Bridget Munger and her "Piggy Express," Pedro and Petunia were rescued and brought to safety in North Carolina. After a short stay with a caring foster family (where they received much-needed medical care and Pedro was neutered), they finally made their way home—to us. A gentle soul finds peaceToday, Pedro lives a peaceful, comfortable life surrounded by nature. He has a spacious wooded area to explore, where he can root, nap, and just be himself. He no longer has to worry about basic needs like food, shade, or clean water—those are givens now, and always will be.
Pedro is a quiet, introspective soul. He often keeps to himself, preferring quiet moments in the woods over the bustle of the herd. That’s just who he is, and we love him for it. Watching him relax in his favorite shady spots, living without fear or stress, is one of our greatest joys. Remembering PetuniaPedro’s story is deeply connected to Petunia’s. They shared a painful past and a beautiful bond. Tragically, we lost Petunia a few years ago to an intestinal virus. Her absence is felt every day—by Pedro and by all of us who knew and loved her.
We honored their special connection during a Día de los Muertos celebration with a sweet story about Pedro dancing with his bride, Petunia. You can read that story here, and you can find her tribute on our In Memoriam page. A life of lovePedro may have come from hardship, but he now lives a life filled with peace, dignity, and unconditional love. We’re so honored to give him the safe forever home he deserves—for the rest of his sweet, gentle life.
