Larry’s story: From neglect to belly rub royalty
Before finding sanctuary with us, Larry's life was marked by instability and neglect. Picked up multiple times by animal control, he spent nearly a year cycling in and out of the local kill shelter. His former owners eventually surrendered him for good, but not before shaving the word “BIG” into his hair—a cruel act that must have been frightening and confusing for him. His name back then was “Big the Pig,” but to us, he became Larry, a more suitable name for an animal we knew deserved so much better.
When we heard about Larry’s situation in 2019, we stepped in without hesitation. He needed more than just shelter; he needed safety, love, and the freedom to just be a pig. Living his best lifeAfter spending so much time confined to a windowless stall, Larry now revels in the simple joys of sanctuary life. You’ll find him lounging in the shade of the trees, soaking up sunshine, and chewing happily on branches and roots. Every day is an adventure—or a nap—in his peaceful new world.
Larry has a playful, mischievous side, too. One of his favorite games is pretending he’s not finished eating just as his caretaker reaches for his bowl—suddenly he’s guarding it like it’s a treasure. And he often parks himself right in front of the stall door to “supervise,” making sure nobody moves in or out without his approval. The belly rub kingBut Larry’s most famous move? The belly flop. At the slightest hint of affection, Larry drops to his side, ready for a belly rub. It’s impossible to resist his charm. Visitors and volunteers alike adore him, and we have the photos to prove it—Larry grinning ear to ear, flopped over in full bliss, soaking up every second of love.
Larry is a shining example of what sanctuary life is all about: safety, respect, and joy. He’s found his forever home, and in return, he reminds us every day just how special these animals are. |
