Janice's story: From trauma to trustWhen Janice came to us in 2020, she was in desperate need of help. Living in a fenced-in yard in Clayton, NC, she had been kept with several dogs who, over time, turned aggressive. What may have started as innocent play quickly turned dangerous. The dogs began attacking her, clamping down on her ears until they split open and bled. Her ears were dripping with blood, and the fear and pain she must have endured are unimaginable.
Sadly, this is a common risk when pigs are housed with dogs. Even when they initially seem to get along, it’s not unusual for pigs to become victims of severe—and sometimes fatal—dog attacks. We’ve seen it before with pigs like our beloved Penny Lane, who was permanently maimed. Thankfully, Janice’s family recognized the severity of the situation before it was too late and reached out to us for help. We knew we had to act fast to rescue her. A new life, full of loveToday, Janice is safe and thriving. Her ears have healed, though the scars remain—a reminder of what she endured. She has become a joyful part of our herd and brings so much personality to the sanctuary.
Janice is truly one of a kind. She’s quirky, playful, and a bit demanding—especially at feeding time. She’s known to stand up on her back legs to beg and will sometimes even sit politely for a treat. She’s soulful, too. When you talk to her, she’ll look you right in the eye, and if you listen closely, you might just hear her talking back in her own sweet piggy way. We are so grateful to know and love Janice. She’s a testament to the resilience of animals and the healing power of compassion. |
