Gertie's great escape: From the streets to sanctuaryWhen we first met Miss Gertie in 2017, she was in rough shape—sickly, malnourished, and terrified. She had been picked up by animal control, wandering the streets in search of food and shelter, and ending up at a livestock auction held at the Durham County Animal Shelter. No one knew exactly where she came from, but based on her size and condition, we suspect she was a victim of the “teacup pig” myth.
It’s likely that Gertie had been intentionally underfed to keep her small and more "marketable" to buyers looking for so-called teacup pigs—a cruel and dangerous practice that far too often ends in neglect or abandonment. This is exactly why we urge people to adopt from shelters or reputable rescues, not breeders. A new life beginsWe knew Gertie deserved better—and we were determined to give her that chance.
Today, Miss Gertie is thriving. She’s a radiant, joyful pig with soft pink skin splashed with black spots and a fabulous mohawk of wiry white hair that she wears proudly year-round. Her little tail wags constantly, a true reflection of the happiness she now feels every day. Curious and confidentGertie has a deep love for life. She adores her herd, delights in exploring her patch of woods, and approaches each new day with wonder and curiosity. Whether she's sniffing out acorns or sunbathing in a clearing, she reminds us just how beautiful it is to feel safe and loved.
Home foreverGertie will never again go hungry. She’ll never feel scared or alone. She has found her forever home—where she will always be cherished, nourished, and surrounded by love.
