Meet Cecil

Sponsor Cecil

From streets to sanctuary

Cecil is a handsome Rhode Island Red rooster with a big presence, a booming crow, and a story that sadly happens far too often.

He was found wandering loose in downtown Durham—cold, frightened, and trying to survive on his own. Our friends Angie and Chad spotted him and tried again and again to catch him, but Cecil was quick and wary. When an ice storm began moving into the area, they knew they had to act fast. One evening they waited until Cecil finally flew up into a tree to roost for the night. Only then were they able to safely reach him and bring him inside.

Cecil’s story is heartbreaking—but unfortunately, it’s not unusual. Roosters are frequently abandoned when people realize they can’t keep them due to HOA rules or city ordinances. When that happens, many birds are simply turned loose outside.

For a rooster, that can be a death sentence.

Roosters are prey animals, and without protection they are extremely vulnerable to predators like foxes, raccoons, and opossums. Add in cold weather, lack of food, and busy roads, and most abandoned roosters don’t survive long.

Today, Cecil is safe at Jenna & Friends Animal Sanctuary, where he finally has the security every rooster deserves—warm shelter, good food, and a flock looking out for him.

By sponsoring Cecil, you help provide his daily care and support the safe, predator-proof spaces that give rescued roosters like him a second chance at life.
