Randie Lou's journey: Learning to live without sightIn the fall of 2021, we rescued two sweet sisters--Randie Lou and Penny Lane—from heartbreaking conditions at a farm in Jackson Springs, NC. They had been living in a dark, filthy, urine-soaked shed with no sunlight, fresh air, or clean space to rest. The ground was a muddy mess, and their lives were void of comfort or proper care.
Randie Lou, in particular, had suffered greatly. She was morbidly obese, the result of a poor diet consisting of commercial hog feed—an unhealthy and calorie-dense diet meant for pigs raised for slaughter, not for pets. Her extreme obesity led to a condition called fat blindness, where the folds of fat around her face have grown so large they now cover her eyes completely. When she arrived at the sanctuary, our vet estimated she was over 100 pounds overweight. Her size and limited mobility were shocking—and deeply saddening. A long road to recoveryObesity in potbellied pigs is a serious and difficult condition to reverse. Their bodies don’t shed weight easily, especially after years of neglect. But we were determined to help Randie Lou reclaim her life.
Today, she’s on a carefully balanced diet that includes fresh vegetables, fruits, and nutrient-rich pig feed, designed specifically for healthy potbellied pigs. She’s losing weight slowly but steadily. Unfortunately, there’s no way to know whether the fat around her eyes will ever reduce enough for her to see again—but we’re holding onto hope. Adjusting hasn’t been easy. Navigating her new environment without sight takes time, and she’s still learning to feel her way around. But what she does know is this: she is safe, loved, and no longer alone. We watch her sniff the air, listen for the sounds of her friends, and enjoy her meals with joy and purpose.
